Nearly 1,000 people have lost their lives, including more than 170 children, as catastrophic monsoon floods tear through villages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Families are trapped without food, clean water, or shelter. Entire communities have been swept away. The Buner district has emerged as the epicentre of this devastation, with whole communities wiped out. Roads, bridges, and villages have been swept away, cutting off access to rescue teams and aid. According to Pakistan’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), further rainfall is forecast in the coming days, potentially exacerbating an already dire situation and hindering relief operations. This has been dubbed the worst disaster since the catastrophic 2022 floods, which claimed thousands of lives. And once again, it is the poorest and most vulnerable who are paying the heaviest price.
